We're diving into a fascinating topic that might seem unexpected at first, but trust me, it's worth exploring. We're going to uncover the surprising similarities between two seemingly distinct worlds: marketing and motherhood.

You might be wondering, "What on earth do these two have in common?" Well, stick around because you're in for a delightful and eye-opening ride. From juggling multiple tasks to understanding human behavior, these two realms share more parallels than you might have ever imagined. So, grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let's uncover the unexpected connections between marketing and motherhood!
1. We're always thinking three steps ahead. Success in both marketing and motherhood demands a shared key trait: thinking three steps ahead. In the marketing world, this forward-thinking approach allows you to anticipate outcomes and respond effectively. Much of this involves setting up automated processes, such as outreach sequences and post-event campaigns, to be well-prepared for various scenarios. On the other hand, in the realm of motherhood, forgetting to bring along the essentials can lead to a chaotic outing with a child in dire need of clean clothes, feeling "hangry," and demanding a binky, even on a seemingly quick trip to the store. So, whether you're strategizing in the boardroom or running errands with little ones in tow, thinking ahead is the secret to staying ahead!
2. Ever-changing trends. Strangely enough, staying on top of the ever-changing digital marketing trends and algorithms can feel just as challenging and tiresome as keeping up with the latest sought-after games, toys, and clothes for kids. In both worlds, there comes a time when you realize that instead of constantly chasing the latest fads, going back to the basics can be the wisest choice. Sometimes, simplicity and timeless approaches are all you need to succeed, both in marketing and in parenting.
3. Sales pitches and bargaining.
Ever find yourself caught in a never-ending back-and-forth with your kids over dinner plans? The battles between their food preferences and what you've prepared can be a real challenge. You put in the effort to educate them about the importance of a balanced meal, and when they still resist, you might even entice them with a treat if they finish it. Surprisingly, this scenario bears a striking resemblance to closing a sales deal, don't you think? Both involve negotiation, persuasion, and the art of finding common ground to reach a satisfying conclusion.
4. Wrangling the troops.
Throughout my sales conference experiences, I've often found myself rallying the team, providing timely reminders of our game plan, key focus areas, and our planned reconnect times. I even make sure to reiterate how they can reach me in case of any urgent matters, sometimes going the extra mile by handing out notepads with my phone number. Strangely enough, these practices are not so dissimilar from what we do when we take a trip to amusement parks. It's all about organizing, communicating effectively, and ensuring everyone stays on the same page to make the most of the experience.
5. We go over the top on themes.
In the world of marketing campaigns, maintaining consistency from start to finish is key. However, when it comes to school theme days, our kids' outfits need to be flawlessly on point from head to toe. There's just something irresistible about getting fully immersed in a fantastic theme. We can't get enough of it! It might be overkill, but it will be memorable.
6. Mom jokes are like a good B2C tagline.
Marketing demands a touch of creativity and wit. As my kids grew older, I discovered the magic of mom jokes, and to my delight, my kids find them utterly hilarious (at least for now). If you've ever participated in a rebrand workshop, particularly for B2C, you've undoubtedly come across some of the cheesiest tagline options in the mix. Embracing a bit of humor and wit is all part of the game in both marketing and parenting!
7. We like what we do - so its our livelihood.
Hobbies? Well, when you're passionate about your profession in marketing or fully immersed in the joys of motherhood, it might feel like we don't have traditional hobbies. That's because we're just doing more of what we truly love. Take this blog, for instance—it's a perfect reflection of that!
From my personal experience, being a Marketing Mom has empowered me to leverage skillsets like creativity, passion, leadership, and stamina, enabling me to thrive both in the dynamic marketing profession and the enchanting realm of motherhood.
Whether you're not in the motherhood chapter or haven't discovered your professional niche, chances are there are trends in your life where your exceptional skillsets hold significant value. Embrace that momentum and focus on amplifying your strengths. You don't have to be a marketing mom to flourish; there are endless possibilities awaiting your talents!
