When does marketing miss the "mark?"

It's a valid question.

It’s all about knowing your target audience. If you don’t put in the time to do the research, then you run the (large) risk of being tone deaf to your prospects.

But researching isn’t just about digital behaviors or quick conversations - researching is truly getting to know your audience as humans, not buyers.

A great marketer will join conversations with positive intentions, because a great marketer loves getting to know people.

They love characteristics and perspectives. They enjoy the psychology of understanding what makes people tick and why. They tend to be the people that remember the minor details from every conversation - the details that others might find useless. They are people that are obsessed with making friends - because people motivate them.

And the best part - it’s all genuine. Of course a marketer's job is to sell to people, but the great marketers are truly passionate and genuinely care.

BONUS POINTS: When marketers work for a company that sells a solution that truly HELPS PEOPLE! (That’s me!) Win-win.

REWIND to answer the initial question: Marketing misses the “mark” when they don’t know their audience. Prioritize understanding the people and what they do. Then follow your instinct. For me personally, it’s this verse that sticks with me 24/7.
